Rather too ... with 未免 — Chinese grammar (HSK 6)

Subject + 未免 + 太 / 有点儿 + Adjective (+ 了)

未免 (wèimiǎn) softens a criticism: "rather too / a bit much". It is usually followed by 太 or 有点儿 plus an adjective, and gives the speaker's opinion that something goes beyond what is reasonable. It sounds more tactful than a blunt 太…了.

Examples

你的要求未免太过分了。
Nǐ de yāoqiú wèimiǎn tài guòfèn le.

Wèi zhè zhǒng xiǎo shìqing shēngqì, wèimiǎn bù zhíde.

Tip: 未免 criticises ("rather too"); 不免 states a natural result ("inevitably").
