Supposing with 倘若 — Chinese grammar (HSK 6)

倘若 + Condition,(Subject) + 就 / 便 + Result

倘若 (tǎngruò) means "if / supposing" and is a literary equivalent of 如果. It appears in formal writing, speeches and literature, and the result clause often uses 就 or the more literary 便. Using it in casual conversation sounds bookish.

Examples

倘若有机会,我便去看看。
Tǎngruò yǒu jīhuì, wǒ biàn qù kànkan.
Should the chance arise, I will go and see.
倘若没有大家的支持,我们不可能成功。
Tǎngruò méiyǒu dàjiā de zhīchí, wǒmen bù kěnéng chénggōng.
Without everyone's support, we could not succeed.
倘若你改变主意,就随时告诉我。
Tǎngruò nǐ gǎibiàn zhǔyi, jiù suíshí gàosu wǒ.
If you change your mind, let me know at any time.
Tip: Treat 倘若 as a formal 如果; in chat, 如果 or 要是 sounds more natural.
