从而 (cóng'ér) means "thereby / thus" and links an action to the result it brings about. It is a written, formal connector used in reports and essays, and the two clauses normally share the same subject. It cannot start a sentence on its own; it always follows a first clause.

Examples

公司改变了管理方法，从而提高了效率。 Gōngsī gǎibiàn le guǎnlǐ fāngfǎ, cóng'ér tígāo le xiàolǜ.	The company changed its management methods, thereby raising efficiency.
多读书可以丰富知识，从而提高自己。 Duō dú shū kěyǐ fēngfù zhīshi, cóng'ér tígāo zìjǐ.	Reading more enriches your knowledge and so helps you improve yourself.
大家经常交流，从而减少了误会。 Dàjiā jīngcháng jiāoliú, cóng'ér jiǎnshǎo le wùhuì.	Everyone communicated often, thereby reducing misunderstandings.

Tip: 从而 is for writing; in conversation say 所以 or 这样就.
