并且 (bìngqiě) means "and / moreover" and joins two verbs or clauses, often the next step of an action or an additional point. Unlike English "and", Chinese 和 cannot join verbs or clauses, so 并且 (or 而且) is what you use there. It is slightly more formal than 而且 and often links actions done by the same subject.

Examples

他同意了我的计划，并且愿意帮助我。 Tā tóngyì le wǒ de jìhuà, bìngqiě yuànyì bāngzhù wǒ.	He agreed to my plan and is willing to help me.
请大家认真复习，并且按时完成作业。 Qǐng dàjiā rènzhēn fùxí, bìngqiě ànshí wánchéng zuòyè.	Please review carefully and finish your homework on time.
这个方法很简单，并且效果很好。 Zhè ge fāngfǎ hěn jiǎndān, bìngqiě xiàoguǒ hěn hǎo.	This method is simple, and moreover it works very well.

Tip: 和 joins nouns only; to join two verbs or clauses say 并且, not 和.
