Even if ... with 即使…也 — Chinese grammar (HSK 4)

即使 + Supposition,(Subject) + 也 + Result

即使 (jíshǐ) means "even if" and introduces a situation, usually hypothetical, that will not change the outcome. The result clause takes 也 after its subject. It is stronger and more formal than 如果, and it signals that the speaker has already considered the worst case.

Examples

即使很累,她也坚持学习。
Jíshǐ hěn lèi, tā yě jiānchí xuéxí.
Even when she is tired, she keeps on studying.
即使明天下雨,比赛也会举行。
Jíshǐ míngtiān xià yǔ, bǐsài yě huì jǔxíng.
Even if it rains tomorrow, the match will go ahead.
即使你不同意,我也要试一试。
Jíshǐ nǐ bù tóngyì, wǒ yě yào shì yī shì.
Even if you do not agree, I want to give it a try.
Tip: Do not replace 也 with 就; 即使…就 mixes "even if" with "then" and sounds wrong.
