If ... then ... with 如果…就 — Chinese grammar (HSK 3)

如果 + Condition,(Subject) + 就 + Result

如果 (rúguǒ) means "if" and introduces the condition; 就 (jiù) in the second clause means "then". 就 goes after the subject of the result clause, not at the start. Chinese has no separate future tense, so the same pattern covers "if it rains, we won't go" and similar future conditions.

Examples

如果明天下雨,我们就不去公园。
Rúguǒ míngtiān xià yǔ, wǒmen jiù bù qù gōngyuán.
If it rains tomorrow, we will not go to the park.
如果你有时间,就来我家玩吧。
Rúguǒ nǐ yǒu shíjiān, jiù lái wǒ jiā wán ba.
If you have time, come over to my place.
如果不努力,就不会有好成绩。
Rúguǒ bù nǔlì, jiù bù huì yǒu hǎo chéngjì.
If you do not work hard, you will not get good grades.
Tip: 就 belongs after the subject: 我们就不去, never 就我们不去.
