Doing two things at once with 一边…一边 — Chinese grammar (HSK 3)

Subject + 一边 + Verb + 一边 + Verb

一边…一边 (yībiān ... yībiān) shows that two actions happen at the same time, like "while ... -ing". Each 一边 is followed by a verb phrase and the subject is stated only once. Use it for actions the same person does simultaneously, not for two different people.

Examples

她一边听音乐一边做作业。
Tā yībiān tīng yīnyuè yībiān zuò zuòyè.
She does her homework while listening to music.
我们一边走一边聊天。
Wǒmen yībiān zǒu yībiān liáotiān.
We chatted while walking.
别一边走路一边看手机。
Bié yībiān zǒu lù yībiān kàn shǒujī.
Don't look at your phone while walking.
Tip: Both halves need a verb; 一边音乐一边作业 without verbs is wrong.
