Because ... so ... with 因为…所以 — Chinese grammar (HSK 2)

因为 + Reason,所以 + Result

因为 (yīnwèi, because) introduces the reason and 所以 (suǒyǐ, so) introduces the result. Unlike English, Chinese happily uses both words in the same sentence, and the reason usually comes first. In casual speech the 因为 clause can also come second, just like English "..., because ...".

Examples

因为下雨,所以我没有去。
Yīnwèi xià yǔ, suǒyǐ wǒ méiyǒu qù.
Because it rained, I did not go.
因为他生病了,所以今天不上班。
Yīnwèi tā shēngbìng le, suǒyǐ jīntiān bù shàngbān.
Because he is sick, he is not going to work today.
我很累,因为昨天没有睡觉。
Wǒ hěn lèi, yīnwèi zuótiān méiyǒu shuìjiào.
I am tired because I did not sleep yesterday.
Tip: Saying both "because" and "so" feels redundant in English but is the natural form in Chinese.
