每…都 (every ... all) — Chinese grammar (HSK 2)

每 + Measure word / Time word + (Noun) + 都 + Verb

每 (měi) means "every" and is followed by a measure word or a time unit: 每个人, 每年, 每天, 每个星期. Chinese almost always adds 都 (all) before the verb to reinforce it, even though English says only "every". Think of 每…都 as a fixed pair.

Examples

我每个星期都去游泳。
Wǒ měi ge xīngqī dōu qù yóuyǒng.
I go swimming every week.
每个人都喜欢她。
Měi ge rén dōu xǐhuan tā.
Everyone likes her.
她每年都去中国。
Tā měi nián dōu qù Zhōngguó.
She goes to China every year.
Tip: Leaving out 都 is the most common slip; 每个人喜欢她 sounds unfinished.
