Suggestions and softening with 吧 — Chinese grammar (HSK 2)

Statement + 吧

吧 (ba) at the end of a sentence turns it into a gentle suggestion or request, like "let's ..." or "why don't you ...". On a statement it can also ask for confirmation, similar to "..., right?". It is softer than a bare command and much more common in daily speech.

Examples

我们走吧。
Wǒmen zǒu ba.
Let's go.
你休息一下吧。
Nǐ xiūxi yīxià ba.
Have a little rest.
你是林安吧?
Nǐ shì Lín Ān ba?
You are Lin An, right?
Tip: Do not confuse 吧 (suggestion / "right?") with 吗 (a genuine yes/no question).
