Negation with 不 — Chinese grammar (HSK 1)

Subject + 不 + Verb / Adjective

不 (bù) goes directly before the verb or adjective to make it negative, covering English "not", "don't" and "isn't". It is used for present situations, habits and future plans. When you negate an adjective you usually drop 很: 今天不热, not 今天不很热.

Examples

我不是医生。
Wǒ bù shì yīshēng.
I am not a doctor.
他不喝茶。
Tā bù hē chá.
He does not drink tea.
今天不热。
Jīntiān bù rè.
It is not hot today.
Tip: 不 never negates 有; "do not have" is 没有, not 不有.
