Yes/no questions with 吗 — Chinese grammar (HSK 1)

Statement + 吗？

To turn any statement into a yes/no question, simply add 吗 (ma) at the end. Nothing else changes: no word order swap and no helper verb like "do" or "are". To answer, repeat the verb or adjective (是 / 不是, 好 / 不好) rather than saying "yes" or "no".

Examples

你是学生吗？ Nǐ shì xuésheng ma?	Are you a student?
你喜欢猫吗？ Nǐ xǐhuan māo ma?	Do you like cats?
今天冷吗？ Jīntiān lěng ma?	Is it cold today?

Tip: Do not add 吗 to a sentence that already has a question word like 什么 or 谁.
